Cooling Tower

  • A cooling tower is a heat rejection device that rejects waste heat to the atmosphere through the cooling of a water stream to a lower temperature.
  • A cooling tower is a specialized heat exchanger in which air and water are brought into direct contact with each other in order to reduce the water's temperature.
  • As this occurs, a small volume of water is evaporated, reducing the temperature of the water being circulated through the tower.

  • Classifications:

    1. Crossflow Cooling Tower

    • In crossflow towers the water flows vertically through the fill while the air flows horizontally, across the flow of the falling water.

    2. Counterflow Cooling Tower

    • Counterflow towers are designed so that air flows vertically upward, counter to the flow of falling water in the fill.
